Kos Town, as the capital and the main port of the island, serves as the getaway to a multitude of experiences and attractions that cutter to diverse interests. However, beyond its vibrant and lively atmosphere, the Town of Kos has also many well-known historical attractions to offer. 





1. The Roman Odeon 

The Roman Odeon, is a small theater or concert hall and one of the most fascinating archaeological sights of Kos. It is believed to have been constructed in the 2nd century AD, during the Roman period and it's located in the heart of Kos next to other archeological attractions, making it easily accessible to visitors. The Odeon is still availed for cultural events and performances in the present day bringing the historical venue back to life and showcasing its enduring significance. 




2. Hippocrates' Plane Tree

Even though the current tree is only about 500 years old, it is said to be a descendant of the original tree, which, according to the legend, stood there 2400 years ago, in Hippocrates' time. Seedings or cuttings from the tree, under which the father of medicine taught his pupils the art of medicine, have been spread all around the world to be planted. 




3. The Castle of Neratzia 

A.k.a. the Castle of the Knights, an imposing coastal fortress, built in the late 14th and early 15th century and located in the Town's harbor. During the same period Kos was densely planted with neratzia (bitter orange trees, from which excellent spoon sweet is made) and lemon trees, hence the name Neratzia. 




4. The Local Market

Speaking of neratzia spoon sweet, the traditional delicacy can be found in Kos' Municipal Market, housed in a remarkable building influenced by the Italian architecture of the 1930s. Once there, one can find traditional spices of Kos, herbs, dried and fresh fruit, most of them bio labeled. The public market is also a great place for gift ideas and souvenirs to bring home. Make sure you try Kos' well-known thyme honey!

 



5. The Old Town 

A large part of the island's history  is hosted on the streets of the Old Town. Cobbled streets, narrow romantic alleys and shops for every taste can be found giving a unique character to the area. One stroll trough the Old Town's lively alleys is never enough and it's likely that during your stay in Kos, you will elaborate a desire to revisit the place repeatedly.
